EXPERIMENT 4: What happens to water when you change its’ temperature?

Risk Assessment:  Adult supervision is needed when the water is heated on the hob.  Please do not lean over the pan to avoid bubbling water and scalding.  View from a distance and turn off the heat before the pan has boiled dry.

You will need:-

  • A small plastic bottle or plastic pot with a lid
  • Water
  • A pan and hob
  • A freezer


  • Fill the plastic container right to the top and put it into the freezer.
  • Leave overnight.
  • Note what has happened.
  • Remove from the freezer and leave outside.
  • Note what happens.
  • Pour the water into the pan and heat on the hob.
  • Note what happens.


  • What temperature is your freezer and what happened to the water in the container?
  • What was the outside temperature (check using a thermometer or on the local weather forecast) and what happened to your water when you left it outside?
  • What happened when you heated the water in the pan?
  • What do we call the water in each of these different states?
  • What is the general name for these different states?
  • What is happening to the water particles as we increase the temperature?
