Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)
This is a time during the day where we as a class stop what we are doing and pick up a book and read for 10 minutes each day. A time to escape into a new world. It is time for the children to understand that reading can transport them into another time, another land and away from our real world. Reading is so important not just as a life long skill but as a way to relax and it is something we wish to encourage in school - reading for pleasure.
Reading with your child
Reading with your child is so important, not just to help them learn but just to share some time together. I love to read their reading records to see what books you are reading with the children. Don't feel that you just have to tell me what pages they read, feel free to use them to tell me what new words you chatted about, what they thought about the book, which character they liked. The reading record is for us to have a two way conversation to help your child develop their confidence with their reading. You don't just have to record school reading books in their records - anything they read at home is find. Last year I learned when they went out and read road signs, information boards at historical sites for example. I love to hear what they find interesting. Encouraging children to read is helping them with a life long skill.
Any interesting comments can be written in their reading records, it really does help to hear what you have to say and what the children say at home. If you need any help with talking about the books with the children I will shortly be putting some questions at the back of their reading record to help you. If you have any questions about you can help your child further please do not hesitate to contact me or chat to me at the end of the day.
Times Table Rock Stars
Passwords will be give for this program and I will place a sticker with information in their communication maths homework books shortly. It encourages the children to learn their times tables in a quick and fun way. Not only do they learn how to multiply but it also helps them learn the division facts for each table. Most of the children are working on their 2x, 5x and 10x tables. We also work on these in the class by having regular times tables tests - the children are set 60 questions and have to answer as many as they can within the time limit of 3 minutes. I will be monitor their progress and when I feel the time is right, I will then allow them access to additional times tables. It is not meant to be a chore but a fun way to learn a skill needed in maths throughout school.
